The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly is Stephanie
Oakes first Young Adult novel that was published in 2015. It is based off of
the Grimm’s Fairy Tale “The Handless Maiden.” It has been adapted into a show
on facebook watch and the second season will premiere in February 2020.
What is your first
opinion of Minnow? From the beginning of the novel Minnow comes across as a
very strong individual whether she has hands or not. As the story progresses
you see that while she is strong she is very naive because of her upbringing.
How do you think her naivety will go over with the court system?
Themes: Truth- One of the
biggest themes that readers will pick up in the story is the idea of truth. The
Prophet’s truth and the Community’s truth vary from Jude and his family’s
truth. Both of their truths are meant to vary greatly from the reader’s truth.
Some of the questions that I asked myself while I was reading this book was,
“how could people not see the lies that the Prophet told and how could those
lies become their truths?” One of the biggest ways to get to the truth is to
ask questions which was seen as a lack of faith in the Community. Not being
able to ask questions helped the Prophet hide his lies but also left room for
doubt, specially for Minnow. Have you ever been in a situation where you
couldn’t ask questions? How did that make you feel and were you able to thrive
in that type of environment?
Jude and his parents
gave up on society when tragedy fell on them. However, you see similarities
between Jude’s truth and the Community’s truth when it comes to society even
though Jude despises the Prophet and the Community for what they have done to
Minnow. Do you see the similarities between their viewpoints?
Quote of the post: “Jude taught me what love
was: to be willing to hold on to another person’s pain. That’s it.”
